Our new window in San Mateo

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

We are bringing our Tuscan charm to the Collective Antiques’ window downtown San Mateo.

In our new window space, we are offering more than just antique furniture and vintage accessories. We have a selection of our Italian handmade home furnishings such as Tuscan ceramics and Venetian glassware.

This 1940s leather club chair is just the right amount of broken-in.

These old wine grape presses are from Tuscany - the perfect accent for your wine cellar. The smaller one was used to press grapes for Tuscan "vin santo."

Of course the space is filled with our antique furniture from Tuscany including this cherry farmhouse table that doubles in size, this 18th century plate rack, the grand scale (97" tall!) Tuscan cabinet, and a classic walnut tilt-top pedestal table.

The antique carousel horse adds a whimsical touch to the space!

These antique Tuscan hall chairs called "sgabelli" are handcarved masterpieces.

The Collective Antiques is located at 55 East 3rd Avenue in San Mateo.  They are open 7 days a week and there is free parking in the rear of the building.

Jan’s Latest Jewelry Designs

Saturday, April 16th, 2011
Jan Dempsey (or mom as we know her!) showcases her one-of-a-kind jewelry creations exclusively at Fatto a Mano.  Shoppers are always shocked to learn that Heather’s mom makes all of the jewelry.  They not only love her great designs, but also her reasonable prices.  Jan has quickly gained a loyal following.  People are loving all the compliments they receive when wearing one of her unique necklaces!  Here are some of Jan’s latest creations.
Coin jewelry is a fun 70s trend that is hot now!

Jan combines Venetian blown glass beads with crystals and semiprecious stones for a fun yet elegant look.

Jan mixes handblown and vintage glass beads for her one-of-a-kind creations.

Jan uses semiprecious stones for her timeless styles. Here an amethyst pendant is paired with czech crystals (left) and carved jade is paired with amazonite and czech crystals.

Handmade Nativity sets from Naples now available

Friday, September 17th, 2010

In Naples, there is a small neighborhood filled with workshops devoted to making Nativity (or “Presepe” in Italian) figurines and elaborate scenes – often complete villages including fish mongers, bread makers, and fruit vendors.  Massimo and I loved wandering the narrow alleys and peeking into the workshops . . .

Massimo and Heather admire the handmade angels in Naples

Now you can bring an authentic Italian Nativity scene into your home this Christmas!

Our figurines are made by the famous Di Virgilio workshop.  The Di Virgilio family has been making Nativity figurines for 4 generations, since 1830.  Their figurines are handmade from terracotta and handpainted – each one has its own character!

We are offering 10-piece figurine sets (pictured below) as well as a handmade (by Massimo!) rustic barn to complete the Nativity scene.

We are also offering by special order only this large scale holy family scene.  These Di Virgilio figurines are works of art complete with crystal glass eyes!  Massimo can customize the scene as you like – this one depicts a Roman ruins scene.  Order now to ensure delivery by Christmas!

I thought you might enjoy a video I found on YouTube – an interview with Genni Di Virgilio who explains the history of their workshop, how he started making figurines when he was 8 years old, and he also discusses how they are keeping this very old tradition fresh by creating figurines of celebrities, politicians and other famous people of today.  Click here:  Di Virgilio on You Tube

If you are interested in purchasing a handmade Italian nativity scene, contact us at the shop anytime.
